Jack lost the battle in January 2013

15 Jan

Jack lost his life to pythiosis and other unknown ailments on January 5th 2013, when he was put to sleep. He could no longer hold his head up. He gave up, so we let him go. Through generous donations we where able to pay for all his medical bills and get him cremated. Part of his remains where returned to his original owner who loved him enough to give him back to our rescue knowing they could not care for him, and gave him a chance at life. Another loss at Home Again Dalmatian rescue soon followed, our beloved elderly dalmatian Ember passed away in her sleep the very next day, her death was due to natural causes. She to was cremated.  A couple weeks later our eldery dalmatian Slinky had to be put to sleep in February after she became seriously ill with cancer and an uncontrolled upper GI bleed. Our last 2 elderly dalmatians Sparky and Athens passed away in March and April of 2013. Sparky of old age and was PTS due to immobility, incontinence, confusion, and loss of appetite. He was found to have a pronounced heart murmur when we took him to the vet and we where told he would go in to congestive heart failure at any time, so the choice was made to not allow him to suffer. He was about 13y/o. Athens being the last dog in the rescue went 3 weeks later from an unknown cause, he was found curled up asleep on his dog bed, he never woke up. We are not sure if it was depression or what. But he went from having 4 buddies to none in the matter of 2 months. Home Again Dalmatian Rescue was running as an elderly dalmatian sanctuary for the year 2012 and all of the elder dogs passed within a few month of each other. We closed our rescue on January 1st 2013 due to lack of funds. We have been closed for exactly a year now. We have helped some but have not been able to bring any dogs in. The following pictures are in order Jack, Ember, Slinky, Sparky, Athens

Oscar’s Story- Stray to wonderful Home

15 Jan

Image

We named this boy Oscar. He was found running at large in the middle of a highway being hoked at by 18 wheelers. This poor boy had his tail tucked running every which way. He finally came up onto our porch and hid. I picked him up and he was just the most sweet boy. I walked the entire neighborhood to see if anyone knew the dog. Our rescue is located in a VERY SMALL town in which everyone knows everyone and every ones dog. A couple people witnessed a car back down a dead end road near the railroad tracks and then take off, when they saw this little dog chasing the car. That is when I knew he was a drop off. After 4 weeks of trying to find his owner (as he was just groomed so maybe he was stolen and then dropped of, we didnt know) he was placed for adoption.  He found a great local home where he is being lived to pieces. We have found out that he must have not been allowed on the furniture because he will not get on the couch or the bed or a chair. Nothing!  But he is slowly learning that he has more privileges at his new home.  His new name is Bennie!

Jack is hanging in there

24 Dec

Jack is still hanging in there.  He has had 2 immune-threapy vaccines and will have a third one on day 21.  Jack will most likely not show any improvement from this disease until day 45-60.   He is not out of the woods.  This is my vets first case.  He is staying at a vets house in Memphis who volunteered her time during the holidays.  He has stopped vomiting but still no weight gain even though he is getting fed every 30-45 min.  His stomach is just not absorbing nutrition.  A recent ultrasound showed severe thickening of the lining of the stomach.   It seems that his ulcers though have healed.  But the pythiosis is so bad it looks like cancer to a vet that has never done an ultrasound on a dog with pythiosis.  Since we have a definitive diagnosis we are continuing his care for that.  The vet has switched his meds to IM vs PO since he doesnt seem to be absorbing anything and that has helped him alot.  I hope after the holidays we can continue to do that which will give him a better chance at living.   Between 7 vets now and so many different tests we are close to $3000 in vet bills. Thank you to everyone who loves Jack and all the holiday angels Jacks bills have so far been paid except a few hundred, in which there is a Chip in Link for Jack. http://jmwolf114.chipin.com/jacks-medical-expenses.  Jack is being a good patient.  Hang in there Jack. Jack has Pythiosis

9 Dec

After several weeks of a diagnosis that eluded us we finally reached one.  Its called Pythiosis. Vets that are not failure with it need to be as it will only come up in lab work if you test for is specifically.  Jack lost 15 more pounds in our care even when we were force feeding him. He became anorexic, depressed and continued to vomit.  He was returned to the vet and his diagnosis was finally found.

jack6We are glad to have found a diagnosis but now we are struggling to save him.  Pythiosis does not have an exact cure.  It only has an experimental treatment with a 50% chance of survival and its expensive.  Jacks vet bills are the highest of any dog we have had, and they may still go up depending if he need surgery or not to cut out the infected intestines. He will be receiving 4 injections and in the mean time being fostered and fed Dyne to put some pounds on.

A friend of mine and I went and saw him at the clinic this last Thursday and he seemed to still be in good spirit.  We hope he pulls through.

Rescue Jack!

11 Nov

Jack was brought back to our rescue after his owners could no longer care for his vet needs. All this is beyond their control and they miss Jack very much.  He was transported from TN to our vet in Jackson MS. He is under a vets care as I type this. Right now he is responding well to treatment but we have no definitive diagnosis of why he has lost weight and is vomiting. Keep Jack in your prayers and thoughts.  If you are an animal lover, Dalmatian lover or just have change/coins laying around please consider donating to Jacks Chip In. Every penny or dollar counts!!    You can also call donations directly into our vet which is on the chip in page.   You can also visit us on facebook!Image If you send a friends request on facebook send a message along with it and tell us you found us here as we have to pick and choose who we becomes friends with as there is a limit!  Sucky.   But we are thinking about opening another Facebook page for people who want to join and have the love for animals to donate toward ChipIns to reputable non profit rescues. I will keep you updated on Jack and our new facebook page.

Helping Canines

10 Nov

I have started this blog to help canine rescue.  I started rescuing Dalmatians and other breeds of dog back in 2008 after losing my one and only son and my one and only Dalmatian. 2 loses i had to put my mind on something else.  Our rescue has recently brought in 5 sick Dalmatians.  We run out-of-pocket, so I thought to myself what “What could I do with my knowledge of website design and computer, my love of animals and writing.  A Blog!!!”   So here I am.  I am creating this blog not only to blog about the adventures of rescue and love of animals but to hopefully raise money and funds to help the rescue dogs that come into our facility.
